HIGHLIGHTS
 
The 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHV) – the newest member of the Prius family – is the world’s first plug-in hybrid using hybrid synergy drive, with the lowest charge time of any plug-in. The PHV combines the benefits of the standard model Prius hybrid vehicle operation with extended electric vehicle (EV) driving and more affordable pricing than pure electric or range-extender type vehicles. It offers the same five-passenger seating and luggage space as the standard Prius model, while providing the quick, smooth, quiet driving of a pure electric vehicle when operating in EV mode. The PHV also retains the Hybrid Synergy Drive synonymous with Prius, where the driver is free to manually select between EV and hybrid mode seamlessly.
 
POWERTRAIN PERFORMANCE
 
  • 1.8L 4-cylinder engine delivers 98 horsepower (gas engine only or 134 combined horsepower).
    • Has electric water pump that requires no belt
    • Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system
    • Overall fuel efficiency of 95 MPGe (2.5 L/100km)*, with 49MPG (4.7 L/100 km)* in hybrid mode
  • Hybrid Synergy Drive system: parallel hybrid system that can provide power either from engine alone, or electric motor alone, or combination of both: provides 17 km of pure EV driving at speeds up to 100km/h
    • Hybrid control computer manages the system so optimum power delivered according to driver demand
    • Start-stop system and regenerative brake help conserve fuel, with battery recharge on deceleration
    • When in EV mode, switches to full hybrid mode under full acceleration, keeping battery charged; even when not in EV mode, will rely more on electric-only when that is more efficient
  • Specially developed, large lithium ion battery
    • Even with new onboard battery charging system and larger 176-lb. battery pack, PHV weighs only 123 lbs. more than the standard Prius Liftback
    • 4.4 kWh battery pack includes charger under battery that features internal cooling fan
    • Lowest charge time of any plug-in: Full charge using external AC outlet takes approximately 2.5 to 3.0 hours using a 120v household outlet or 1.5 hours using a 240v outlet; 120v charging cable connects to charging port inlet on right-rear fender
    • Battery charge cable weighs just 3.75 lbs. and fits in its own compartment in trunk area
    • Timer allows charging to take place during off-peak hours and can be set for both start and end times
    • In event of malfunction, Charging Circuit Interrupter Device (CCID) in the cable will stop flow of electricity for safety, and indicator lamp will flash
