TOYOTA ANNOUNCES TWO VOLUNTARY RECALLS AND AMENDS POTENTIAL FLOOR MAT INTERFERENCE CAMPAIGNS ANNOUNCED IN 2009

  • Driver’s Side Floor Carpet Plastic Pad Modification on certain Lexus GS 300 and 350 AWD
  • Driver’s Side Floor Carpet Cover Replacement on Lexus RX and Toyota Highlander
  • Models Added to the Voluntary Floor Mat Safety Improvement and Safety Recall campaigns

Toronto, ON – February 24, 2011 – Given the importance Toyota attaches to customer confidence in their vehicles, Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI), will conduct a voluntary safety recall of approximately 850 2006 and early 2007 Model Year GS 300 and GS 350 All-Wheel Drive vehicles to modify the shape of the plastic pad embedded in the driver’s side floor carpet.  In the event that the floor carpet around the accelerator pedal is not properly replaced in the correct position after a service operation, there is a possibility that the plastic pad embedded into the floor carpet may interfere with the operation of the accelerator pedal.  If this occurs, the accelerator pedal may become temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position.

TCI will also carry out a voluntary safety recall of approximately 17,000 2004 through 2006 and early 2007 RX 330, RX 350, and RX 400h vehicles, and approximately 13,000 2004 through 2006 Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles to replace the driver’s side floor carpet cover. If the forward retention clip used to secure the driver’s side floor carpet cover, which is located in front of the center console, is not installed properly, the cover may lean toward the accelerator pedal and interfere with the accelerator pedal arm.  If this occurs, the accelerator pedal may temporarily become stuck in a partially depressed position.

As Toyota USA is amending their floor mat campaigns, Toyota Canada is also amending its safety improvement and safety recall campaigns that were initiated in the fall of 2009 to address the potential risk of an unsecured or incompatible floor mat interfering with the accelerator pedal.   The models added to the safety improvement campaign include:
  • 16,000 2003 through 2009 4Runner; and
  • 99,300 2006 through 2010 RAV4
TCI will extend the same vehicle modifications to our Canadians customers as will be provided in the US.

The following model has been added to the late 2009 safety recall to replace the genuine Lexus accessory all-weather floor mat and perform the vehicle modifications:
  • 850 2008 through 2011 Lexus LX 570

No other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved in this recall, and Toyota is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to these conditions.

Owners involved in the campaigns announced by TCI today will be notified by first class mail in the near future and provided with details regarding the campaign and condition affecting their vehicle.  Newly announced and amended recall remedies and vehicle improvements will be performed by Toyota and Lexus dealerships at no charge to vehicle owners.  TCI recommends that, until owners of affected Lexus LX 570 vehicles receive their campaign notice, they remove any genuine Lexus accessory drivers’ side all-weather floor mat in the vehicle.
