Toyota is conducting a safety recall involving certain Prius vehicles

TORONTO, ON – August 28, 2019 – Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) is conducting a safety recall involving certain 2017-18 Model Year Prius vehicles in Canada. 1,226 vehicles are involved in this recall.

The subject vehicles were equipped with an accessory seat heater kit at port facilities.  During installation for the accessory seat heater, three pin terminals in the engine room main wire harness connector are removed and reinstalled in a seat heater sub-wire harness connector.  Due to improper removal of these wire harness pin terminals, there is a possibility a specific pin terminal connecting the hybrid engine control unit (ECU) to ignition power could have been damaged.  In this condition, vibration during normal vehicle use could result in an open circuit at that terminal.  The hybrid ECU may then detect an open circuit, causing warning lights to illuminate and audible chimes to sound, messages to display on the instrument panel, and the hybrid system to shut down, resulting in the loss of motive power.  Loss of motive power while driving at higher speeds could increase the risk of a crash.

All known owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail to return their vehicles to a Toyota dealer.  For all involved vehicles, dealers will modify the wire harness to repair the wire connections at no cost to owners.
