Considering the human factor in vehicle safety

For as long as there have been cars on the road, manufacturers have been researching new ways to make them safer. Equally important is the human factor – the driver behind the wheel. How can the vehicle help the driver avoid risky driving behaviours?

This is at the root of ongoing research funded by Toyota at the University of Toronto through the Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC). Researchers are looking at what type of feedback from a vehicle is most effective in inhibiting risky driving behaviours. Using a vehicle simulator, the research team is able to assess physical and cognitive responses to various situations and determine the most successful feedback methods which will be further assessed via on-road testing.

This is one of more than thirty research projects led by CSRC in collaboration with universities, research institutes, government agencies and other organizations to better understanding the dynamics between vehicles, drivers and traffic environments. Toyota has committed $85 million to fund CSRC into the 2020s. The research and results of CSRC projects will be shared across the industry, ensuring everyone has access to information that can make our roads safer.
