Designing more eco-friendly vehicles has long been a goal of the automotive industry. But even vehicles with zero emissions need styling, power, performance and versatility to meet the needs of today’s drivers. Enter the Toyota FCV, which makes its market debut in Japan, Europe and California, USA in 2015.

Fuel cell vehicles, or FCVs, harness the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity and power the vehicle, no gasoline required. And there are zero CO2 emissions produced by an FCV – the only by-product is water. But that’s not all. The Toyota FCV takes about the same amount of time to fuel up as a gasoline-powered vehicle, and typically requires less fuel to provide the same amount of power output as its conventional gasoline-powered counterpart. Win, win, win.

To ensure the FCV could meet the needs of drivers in different environments, Toyota also put the car to the test in a variety of conditions, including taking advantage of some of Canada’s extreme weather. Testing in Yellowknife, NWT and at Toyota’s Cold Weather Research Centre in Timmins, ON helped ensure the FCV’s reliable operation in temperatures as low as -30 C. Like every Toyota vehicle, quality, reliability and dependability are at the FCV’s core. These qualities also extend beyond the driving experience. A fully fueled FCV will be capable of supplying enough energy to power a house for a week in an emergency, which is why Toyota engineers developed an external power supply device for this exact use.
