(TORONTO) – Legions of loyal Canadian drivers have helped make the Toyota Camry one of North America’s most popular passenger cars, and for the 2010 model year Toyota gives Canadians new reasons to love the Camry, with an upgraded engine and transmission in four-cylinder models that delivers Toyota’s “more power, less fuel” advantage.

“Four-cylinder models are the most popular Camry option in Canada, combining ample performance with the fuel-efficiency that Canadian drivers demand – and this year we make things better with a new 2.5 litre engine and six-speed transmission that deliver an increase in horsepower and better fuel efficiency than ever before,” noted Warren Orton, Director at Toyota Canada Inc. “All 2010 Camry models also feature a revised front grille, bumper, new wheel design, front headlamps and the safety of LED tail-lamps and standard Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control.”

The 2010 Toyota Camry is now on sale at Toyota dealers across Canada. The Camry LE with new four-cylinder engine carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price starting at $24,900. The Camry SE with new four-cylinder engine starts at a suggested price of $26,205. The Camry LE V6 starts at a suggested price of $28,345. The Camry SE V6 starts at a suggested price of $31,555. Finally, the Camry XLE V6 starts at a suggested price of $36,040.

Power and performance

Four or six? The choice is yours. With two engines – including a new engine for four-cylinder models – the 2010 Camry delivers more power and performance. For the 2010 model year, Toyota engineers have upgraded the four-cylinder engine in the CamryLE and CamrySE with a new, 2.5litre model that generates up to 179HP and up to 171lb-ft of torque on 4-cylinder SE models or 169 HP and 167 lb-ft of torque on 4-cylinder LE models. That compares to 158HP and 161lb-ft of torque for the 2.4litre engine it replaces for additional driving confidence and fun.

But this added performance doesn’t come with added cost, thanks to new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions that help 2010 Camry owners enjoy better fuel efficiency: a combined 8.0litres per 100 kilometres in those models equipped with a manual transmission, and a combined 7.7litres per 100 kilometres in automatics.

In short, you’ll spend more time on the road, and less time at the pumps.

Canadians may also opt for a 2010 Camry equipped with Toyota’s proven 3.5litre V6 and six-speed automatic transmission. This combination delivers extra power – up to 268HP and up to 248lb-ft of torque – coupled with impressive fuel efficiency of 9.0litres per 100 kilometres (combined).

Handling and control

All 2010 Camry models deliver the driving confidence of front-wheel drive. In addition, Toyota’s Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control technologies are fitted as standard equipment on all models – including, for the first time, as standard on the CamryLE.

Handling and control are enhanced with a suspension designed to deliver a comfortable, stable ride under a variety of conditions. All Camry models feature Macpherson gas struts, coil springs and stabilizer bars fitted front and rear. Rear suspensions on all models are independent, dual-link designs, while the front and rear suspensions on the CamrySE and CamrySEV6 are sport-tuned for a stiffer feel and additional performance.

Brakes and tires

Driving situations develop quickly, which is why the 2010 Toyota Camry features the superior braking power of Toyota’s Antilock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist as standard on all models. Front ventilated disc brakes and rear disc brakes deliver ample stopping power.

VVT-i is a Toyota engine system that continually varies the intake valve timing to deliver optimal valve timing for a full range of driving conditions. It improves drivability, performance and fuel efficiency, and reduces emissions.

Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i)

The principle behind ETCS-i – sometimes called “drive-by-wire” – is used on all modern racing cars. When the driver depresses the accelerator, the engine instantaneously receives an electronic signal demanding more power. By replacing the traditional, less-efficient cable link between pedal and engine, ETCS-i can provide better fuel efficiency, faster response and smoother acceleration. It also networks with the engine’s computer to co-ordinate with other control systems, as appropriate.

Acoustic Control Induction System

ACIS increases the amount of air entering the engine by optimizing the length of the intake manifold under various driving conditions. The result is an increase in engine power and torque whenever the driver needs it most.

Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT)

Electronic control of Toyota automatic transmissions has delivered several breakthroughs in driving comfort and vehicle efficiency. ECT helps to ensure optimal gear change timing according to throttle position and vehicle load, and judges the most suitable time to initiate torque converter lock-up for increased fuel efficiency. It also networks with the engine’s computer to co-ordinate with other control systems, as appropriate.

Vehicle Stability Control

Toyota’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is an active safety system that automatically helps to control a vehicle when it starts to slide – for example, when trying to turn at too high a speed. VSC compares driver braking and steering commands to the vehicle’s actual performance then activates individual brakes as needed and adjusts the throttle setting to help maintain stability and keep the vehicle on course.

Antilock Braking System

Toyota’s Antilock Braking System (ABS) uses sensors to monitor speed, traction, vehicle load and the driver’s applied brake force. The ABS then controls brake applications to minimize wheel lock-up, reducing the chance of the vehicle skidding. The result is shorter stopping distances on wet, gravely, sandy or other surfaces where traction is questionable.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution

Toyota’s Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) system minimizes stopping distances by maximizing the braking power applied to those wheels that have the best grip. This system also automatically adjusts the fore/aft brake balance according to vehicle load, and the right/left brake balance if brakes are applied during cornering.

Brake Assist

Toyota’s Brake Assist (BA) is a system designed to assist the driver during emergency braking by supplementing the braking power applied if the driver has not pushed hard enough on the pedal in an emergency braking situation. It works in conjunction with ABS to minimize lock-up during emergency situations.
