Toyota Announces Voluntary Recall of Optional Accessory

Toronto, ON, (October 10, 2013) – Toyota Canada Inc., will conduct a voluntary safety campaign involving approximately 369 accessory hard tri-fold tonneau covers sold and installed as optional accessories on certain 2007-13 MY Toyota Tundra and 2007-13 MY Toyota Tacoma vehicles.

The involved tonneau cover assembly is a tri-fold design in which the front-most cab panel can be opened with the ignition key. During assembly of the lock cylinder to the cab panel, the lock cylinder could bind. If the lock cylinder binds in the open position, the cab panel latches might not secure to the strikers when the panel is closed. If the vehicle is driven with the cab panel latches unsecured, the tonneau cover assembly could lift and separate from the truck bed, which could create a road hazard for other vehicles or cause a collision.

All known owners of the subject affected vehicles will be notified by mail to return their vehicles to a Toyota dealership. The customer will be presented with two interim remedy options (1) to disable the cab panel release mechanism of the tonneau cover, or (2) have the tonneau cover removed. As new remedy parts are available, customers will be notified by mail to return their vehicle to a Toyota dealership to have the final remedy parts installed. All repairs will be performed at no cost to vehicle owners.

Information is available to customers at www.toyota.ca/recall or by calling the Toyota Customer Interaction Centre at 1-888-TOYOTA-8 (1-888-869-6828).
