2007 TOYOTA 4RUNNER – PRODUCT DETAIL
DRIVETRAIN
Power is crucial to total SUV performan ce and 4Runner offers a choi ce of drivetrains to suit the most demanding owners. No matter which 4Runner they choose, drivers appreciate both the ability to cover rugged off-road terrain with ease and confiden ce , and the composed on-road handling.
Powering V6 4Runners is Toyota 's high output, low mass 4.0-litre, DOHC 24-valve V6 engine, which produ ce s 236 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 266 lb/ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The V6 engine also uses VVT-i and ACIS technology to enhan ce performan ce .
The DOHC 32-valve, 4.7-litre V8 engine that powers both 4Runner SR5 V8 and the Limited V8 is similar to the commanding powerplant under the hood of Toyota 's full-sized Sequoia SUV. Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) technology optimizes valve overlap throughout the engine's speed range to boost torque and improve fuel economy while reducing exhaust emissions. In the 4Runner, it produ ce s 260 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 306 lb/ft of torque at 3,400 rpm. A two-stage Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) enhan ce s engine performan ce in all speed ranges by tuning the intake manifold length according to engine operating conditions.
V6 and V8 4Runner meets Environment Canada's stringent Tier 2 emission standards. Both designed to meet not only current but also future environmental standards. In addition, the 4Runner has excellent fuel economy in both powertrains; 13.5 L/100 km in the city and 10.2 L/100 km on the highway for the V6 models, and for the V8 models, 14.6 L/100 km for the city and 11.3 L/100 km for the highway.
Both V6 and V8 4Runners are also equipped with a 5-speed, Super ECT (Super Electronically-Controlled Transmission). This adaptive transmission is capable of learning and adjusting to the operator's driving style. It also manages shift decisions based on engine speed and load, controlling engine torque to deliver smooth output and seamless shifts. Uphill and Downhill Shift Logic monitor throttle angle and vehicle speed so that the transmission stays in the appropriate gear for extra control while climbing or des ce nding a grade.
All V8 4Runners feature full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD) to deliver all-wheel drive confiden ce and stability at all times. The Torsen limited-slip ce ntre differential may be locked by the driver for maximum traction on very slippery or uneven surfa ce s. Under normal driving conditions, torque splits 40 per ce nt front and 60 per ce nt rear for stable tracking on- or off-road, ac ce lerating or de ce lerating, when both axles have equal traction. If slippage occurs, the system will direct more power to the axle that has the most grip.
V6 4Runners are equipped with Toyota 's sophisticated Multi-Mode One-Touch 4WD system and an Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD). This system provides the benefits of both full- and part-time 4WD in one system. This system combines with highly effective traction and stability control technology to help make driving on loose surfaces controlled and predictable.
Both V8 and V6 models are equipped with a range of stability and traction technology to enhance driving confidence. A Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system works with the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), controlling both engine output and brakes to correct yaw rate. Using a yaw sensor in conjunction with the ABS and traction control systems, VSC enhances cornering stability by correcting oversteer and understeer situations, managing both engine output and brakes to dampen the unstable condition. VSC is prohibited when the centre differential is locked.
During rugged 4WD off‑road situations, Active Traction Control (A‑TRAC) works closely with the ABS and Engine Control Module (ECM), using the sensors and actuators to apply braking force and restore traction to a slipping wheel while the ECM modulates power. The torque that would have been lost through slippage is then distributed to the remaining wheels, achieving an effect similar to that of three limited-slip differentials.
Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) automatically increases stability when the vehicle is starting on an incline. When the 4Runner is in any forward gear, HAC briefly applies the brakes to reduce the backward speed of the vehicle. This controls and slows backward roll long enough for the driver to switch from the brake pedal to the throttle. As soon as the throttle is depressed, HAC disengages and A-TRAC engages.
Downhill Assist Control (DAC) uses brake intervention to improve directional control while driving down a steep or slippery incline. With the transmission in L4, drivers engage DAC via a switch on the console. With no pedal input from the driver, DAC uses the brakes to maintain an optimum speed between 5 and 7 km/h (2 to 4 mph) for a controlled descent.
Power-assisted ventilated discs in front and solid discs in the rear, and a 4-sensor, 4-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) are standard, enhan ce d with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. EBD controls brake pressure to help prevent rear-wheel lockup and maintain good directional stability and steerability on slippery surfa ce s. EBD also controls the distribution of the left and right brake for ce s when the vehicle is turning. The system monitors wheel speed sensors and the rate of de ce leration, controlling brake for ce to the inner wheels during cornering. Brake Assist interprets a fast application of the brake pedal as emergency braking and unobtrusively exerts additional brake pressure for short, controlled stops.
The 4Runner's cabin design incorporates deformable structures behind the interior trim to reduce the chance of injury due to secondary impacts within the vehicle in the event of a collision or roll-over.
The fuel tank is extremely lightweight and durable. It is made of a 7-layer composite plastic resin material which helps reduce drumming effects and resonance which sometimes occur in steel tanks with low level fuels. The composite plastic material also eliminates the chance of long term corrosion commonly found on 4WD vehicles used in extreme conditions.
A front bumper box-beam cross member, mounted low between the frame rails prevents under-ride of a vehicle in front during a collision, and crumple points ahead of the front axle and a diagonal shear area absorbs and redirects impact energies away from the passenger cabin.
The 4Runner's chassis design uses full-length boxed section frame rails with nine fully-welded cross members for excellent torsional rigidity. This also reduces road and drivetrain vibration transferred to the passenger cabin and provides better occupant protection in the event of an impact.
The double wishbone, independent front suspension is a long-stroke design with front coil-springs and shock absorbers. For precise steering and excellent off-road driveability, this system minimizes changes in track and camber during cornering and when driving over bumps. This arrangement also reduces the unsprung mass for better on-road tracking.
In the rear, 4Runner has a 4-link suspension with gas shock absorbers, coil springs and stabilizer bar. A diagonal-linked Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) is standard on the SR5 V8 and all Limited models and optional on the SR5 V6. This sport enhan ce ment links the compression chamber of each shock absorber to its diagonal counterpart using a piston system pushing against a low-pressure nitrogen charge.
In this way, small motions are transmitted across the vehicle, from front to rear, enabling the suspension to balance the differences. By doing this, X-REAS dampens overall suspension compression and extension motions, dampens diagonal roll and pitch, improves on-road stability and handling, and reduces vehicle bottoming.
Standard tires are P265/70R16 all-season radials with alloy wheels for the 4Runner SR5 V6 models and P265/60R18 all-season radials for the Limited versions. The SR5 V8 model is equipped with P265/65R17 mud and snow tires. All models have a full-sized spare and are fitted with a tire pressure monitoring system. Ground clearan ce is a useful 231 mm (9.1 inches), while towing capacity is 2268 kgs (5000 lbs).

In addition to the traction and stability control technology already mentioned, 4Runner is equipped with many safety features to protect occupants, both on-road and off.
The dual front airbags use an electronic 3-sensor system that can detect the severity of an impact and modify the speed and pressure of airbag deployment so that passengers are protected with reduced chance of secondary passenger injury. On the driver's side, a seat position switch gives smaller drivers, sitting closer to the steering wheel, lower deployment force in a lower impact collision.
The 4Runner Limited models are also equipped with front seat-mounted side airbags, plus front and rear roll-sensing side curtain airbags, which can be disengaged for off-road use.
