2008 TOYOTA SEQUOIA - PRODUCT DETAIL
KING OF THE ROAD - KING OF THE HILL: THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA
The Toyota Sequoia was launched in 2000 as Toyota's first full-size SUV designed and built specifically for the North American market. Built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana, it quickly gained a reputation as a strong and capable performer, perfect for owners with active lifestyles looking for space and utility in a "Never Quit" full-size SUV.
For the 2008 model year, these key characteristics were retained and enhanced. The all-new Sequoia features outstanding horsepower and interior volume. Beyond this, the Sequoia has been designed for maximum comfort - even on long-distance drives - and increased convenience.
The result is a vehicle that establishes a new benchmark for powerful, capable, comfortable and convenient sport utility vehicles, making the Sequoia a serious contender and outstanding choice in the full-size SUV category.
THREE GREAT MODELS
Canadians can choose from three great Sequoia models with a mix of style and features to serve every taste and need:
COMMANDING POWER
As the largest member of Toyota's five-vehicle SUV line-up, the Sequoia has been known from the start for its power. For the all-new 2008 Sequoia, Toyota broadens this tradition with a choice of two engines:
The 2008 Toyota Sequoia SR5 is built around Toyota's proven 4.7-litre V8 featuring Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). This engine produces up to 276 HP @ 5,400 RPM and up to 313 lb-ft of torque @ 3,400 RPM.
The 2008 Sequoia Limited and Sequoia Platinum feature an all-new 5.7-litre V8 featuring a crank hold electronic starter control and Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) on both the intake and exhaust cams. This engine produces excellent power of up to 381 HP @ 5,600 RPM and up to 401 lb-ft of torque @ 3,600 RPM.
Both engines feature dual overhead cams, 32 valves, sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection and an engine oil cooler. In addition, both are standard-fitted with a heavy-duty battery, starter, alternator and heater, and both are mated to a stainless steel exhaust system.
SOPHISTICATED TRANSMISSIONS DELIVER POWER AND EFFICIENCY
The Toyota Sequoia is fitted with one of two transmissions, depending on model. Both are Super Electronically Controlled Transmissions featuring overdrive, lock-up torque converter, transmission cooler and automatic transmission fluid warmer.
The 4.7-litre V8 in the Toyota Sequoia SR5 is mated to a proven five-speed automatic transmission. This combination consumes 16.1 litres of fuel per 100 km in the city, and 12.3 litres per 100 km on the highway (14.4/100 km combined), and qualifies for an emissions rating of Tier 2 Bin 5.
The 5.7-litre V8 in the Toyota Sequoia Limited and Platinum is mated to an all-new six-speed automatic transmission that significantly enhances power and is tuned to deliver smooth shifting, quiet operation and excellent fuel efficiency. This combination consumes 16.3 litres of fuel per 100 km in the city, and 11.2 litres per 100 km on the highway (14.0/100 km combined), and qualifies for an emissions rating of Tier 2 Bin 5.
COMMAND PERFORMANCE: SUSPENSION, HANDLING AND STEERING
Performance sets the Toyota Sequoia apart from other full-size SUVs, and enhancing the Sequoia's already impressive suspension, handling and steering qualities was a key goal for the 2008 model.
All Sequoia models are equipped with one-touch four-wheel drive (4WD), Vehicle Stability Control and Active Traction Control. These systems support the stability and maximize the peformance of the Sequoia in a variety of on-road and off-road conditions. All Sequoia models are fitted with a free-wheel Automatic Disconnecting Differential mechanism to enable automatic connection or disconnection with the front axle shaft as the vehicle switches from 2WD to 4WD. This contributes to better fuel efficiency when driving in 2WD mode.
A newly-tuned suspension is fitted front and rear, customized to each model, as follows:
WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD
All 2008 Toyota Sequoia models feature the sure-footed traction and solid stance provided by large mud and snow rated tires. The Sequoia SR5 is fitted with 275/65R18 tires on 18" aluminum alloy wheels with wheel locks, while the Sequoia Limited and Sequoia Platinum models ride on 275/55R20 tires on 20" aluminum alloy wheels with wheel locks.
CONTROL AND BRAKING FEATURES COVER ALL THE BASES
The 2008 Toyota Sequoia is equipped with a number of active and passive systems to maximize the safety of driver, passengers, and those around the vehicle.
In addition to the security that comes from one-touch 4WD, the Sequoia features a full suite of braking technologies. These include a power-assisted Antilock Braking System with Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist technologies, acting on front and rear ventilated disc brakes.
SAFETY FOR EVERYONE - INCLUDING THOSE AROUND THE VEHICLE
When it comes to safety, the 21st Century vehicle needs to go beyond protecting the driver and passenger to also make things better even for those who are merely in the vehicle's proximity.
All models are fitted with clearance and back-up sensors, while the Sequoia Platinum is standard-equipped with a back-up camera - an important safety system that gives drivers "eyes in the backs of their heads": namely, the ability to check for obstacles immediately behind the vehicle, which might otherwise not be visible using mirrors.
For those riding in the Sequoia, the 2008 model features six air bags, including dual-stage front air bags for the driver and front passenger, front seat side mounted air bags, and roll-sensing front and rear side curtain air bags.
All Sequoia models feature three-point lap and shoulder belts in all seating positions - eight in the SR5 and Limited models, and seven in the Platinum model - to maximize protection for the occupants. Front seat belts feature pre-tensioners and force limiters, plus adjustable B-pillar shoulder belt anchors.
Younger occupants are cared for with anchor points for child restraint seats and child protector rear door locks.
Several additional safety improvements are fitted as standard equipment on each and every Sequoia. These include:
"VIBRANT CLARITY" CREATES A COMMANDING EXTERIOR
The 2008 Toyota Sequoia is styled with a commanding, distinctive exterior that's informed by Toyota's Vibrant Clarity design language, and features a dynamic presence that is immediately recognizable from a distance.
Viewed from the front, the new Sequoia features the trapezoidal radiator grille that has become a hallmark of modern Toyota Truck design. This is framed by a lower grille opening and prominent fog lamp openings to project a sense of quality and strength. Meanwhile, a uniquely designed four-beam headlamp, incorporating side marker lamps and front turn signal lamps, not only adds to the Sequoia's commanding appearance but also contributes to the Sequoia's advanced headlamp brightness levels.
Viewed from the side, one is immediately impressed by the flowing, single motion form from the A pillar to D pillar, which emphasizes the new Sequoia's excellent interior volume. Below the window line, a single-surface form flows from the front fender to the rear combination lamp to emphasize the long-flowing feel of this truck-derived SUV, while bold front and rear fenders are balanced with a continuous body cross-section for a rugged appearance that matches the Sequoia's considerable capabilities.
At the rear, the front grille's trapezoidal shape is reflected around the licence plate, emphasizing a wider, more expansive Sequoia. Meanwhile, the bottom of the back window is low enough to provide good visibility from the cabin.
"VIBRANT CLARITY" INSPIRES A PREMIUM, COMFORTABLE INTERIOR
While the Sequoia's exterior is commanding, its interior features a premium, high-quality feel that's surprising in a truck-derived full-size SUV. All Sequoia models feature a logical instrument panel layout making controls easy to use and leather seat surfaces for ride comfort even on long journeys.
The 2008 Sequoia sets a new standard for interior volume, with a generous cargo capacity of up to 3.42 m3 behind front seats.
The Sequoia SR5 and Sequoia Limited seat up to eight adults, with three-person seating in the 2nd and 3rd rows, while the Sequoia Platinum seats up to seven adults but with superior comfort, thanks to 2nd row captain's seats.
All seats have been enlarged compared to the previous generation Sequoia, taking advantage of the new model's more spacious design to provide comfortable accommodation for a 6'-3" adult in every seating position. The shape of the seats has been refined to increase comfort, and headrests have been fitted for all seating positions.
Entering and exiting the 2nd and 3rd rows is easier too, thanks to redesigned 2nd row side doors that open to a 70 degree angle.
SR5 and Limited models offer a child-care position in the middle of the 2nd row bench. This allows the seat to slide forward to a maximum of 225 mm.
All Sequoia models feature power folding 3rd row seats for ease of conversion from passenger carrier to cargo hauler.
