The 2010 Corolla: new standard safety features on more models and new options packages make things better for Canada’s most popular Toyota

Regardless of trim level and options, all 2010 Toyota Corolla models are built in Cambridge, Ontario and designed for Canadian driving, delivering performance, value and plenty of features and amenities that drivers typically expect only on larger, more expensive vehicles. New for the 2010 model year, the Corolla S and Corolla LE models join the Corolla XRS in featuring Toyota’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) technology as standard equipment. VSC is also available on Corolla CE models equipped with the Enhanced Convenience Package. The Corolla S and Corolla XRS may also be ordered with a new Leather Package, while a new Moon Roof and Navigation Package is available for the Corolla LE.

 

The 2010 Toyota Corolla is now on sale across Canada. The Corolla CE carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price starting at $15,460. The Corolla S starts at a suggested price of $20,285, the Corolla LE starts at a suggested price of $21,165, and the Corolla XRS starts at a suggested price of $22,550.

All 2010 Corolla models are also equipped with an engine immobilizer.

Direct Ignition System

DIS is an ignition system without a distributor. This improves reliability by removing a number of mechanical components. It also delivers greater control over ignition spark generation and enables ignition timing to be controlled over a wider range – both of which contribute to reducing exhaust emissions.

Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i)

The principle behind ETCS-i – sometimes called “drive-by-wire” – is used on all modern racing cars. When the driver depresses the accelerator, the engine instantaneously receives an electronic signal demanding more power. By replacing the traditional, less-efficient cable link between pedal and engine, ETCS-i can provide better fuel efficiency, faster response and smoother acceleration. It also networks with the engine’s computer to co-ordinate with other control systems, as appropriate.

Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT)

Electronic control of Toyota automatic transmissions has delivered several breakthroughs in driving comfort and vehicle efficiency. ECT helps to ensure optimal gear change timing according to throttle position and vehicle load, and judges the most suitable time to initiate torque converter lock-up for increased fuel efficiency. It also networks with the engine’s computer to co-ordinate with other control systems, as appropriate.

Vehicle Stability Control

(Corolla S, Corolla LE, Corolla XRS, available on Corolla CE)

Toyota’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is an active safety system that automatically helps to control a vehicle when it starts to slide – for example, when trying to turn at too high a speed. VSC compares driver braking and steering commands to the vehicle’s actual performance then activates individual brakes as needed and adjusts the throttle setting to help maintain stability and keep the vehicle on course.

Antilock Braking System

(All models)

Toyota’s Antilock Braking System (ABS) uses sensors to monitor speed, traction, vehicle load and the driver’s applied brake force. The ABS then controls brake applications to minimize wheel lock-up, reducing the chance of the vehicle skidding. The result is shorter stopping distances on wet, gravely, sandy or other surfaces where traction is questionable.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution

(All models)

Toyota’s Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) system minimizes stopping distances by maximizing the braking power applied to those wheels that have the best grip. This system also automatically adjusts the fore/aft brake balance according to vehicle load, and the right/left brake balance if brakes are applied during cornering.

Brake Assist

(All models)

Toyota’s Brake Assist (BA) is a system designed to assist the driver during emergency braking by supplementing the braking power applied if the driver has not pushed hard enough on the pedal in an emergency braking situation. It works in conjunction with ABS to minimize lock-up during emergency situations.

Active Headrest with Whiplash Protection

(All models)

Neck injuries are the most common reported injury in an accident. Toyota’s Active Headrest technology is designed to reduce the stress on the neck during low-speed rear accidents. When a person’s lower back presses into the seatback, the headrest moves forward and up to catch the back of the head, thereby helping to reduce the incidence and severity of whiplash.
