Toyota Canada announces the Toyota Star Safety System: First full-line manufacturer to make six active safety features standard on every new 2011 vehicle

(TORONTO) – The best protection against an auto accident is to help avoid it in the first place, and that’s the role of active safety systems. It’s also why starting with every new 2011 model year vehicle, Toyota Canada will include six active safety technologies as standard equipment on each and every Toyota vehicle.

The Star Safety System includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)[1], Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA)[2] and Smart Stop Technology (SST)[3].

“Toyota continues to develop and incorporate technologies that advance the safety and performance of our vehicles, and the Star Safety System embodies this commitment,” said Stephen Beatty, Managing Director at Toyota Canada Inc. “The Star Safety System is a clear commitment to our customers that no matter which Toyota they choose, safety comes standard in every vehicle,”

One of the first vehicles to feature the Star Safety System as standard is also Toyota’s most popular model – the 2011 Toyota Corolla, which goes on sale in January. In addition to the Star Safety System, the Canadian-built Corolla is significantly updated for the 2011 model year – with fresh styling, more standard features and updated options packages.

To help customers make informed decisions and increase their knowledge of the sophisticated safety systems in their vehicles, the elements of the Toyota Star Safety System™ are explained in detail in the Safety section of the Toyota Canada web site (www.toyota.ca). Customers can also visit their local Toyota dealerships for more information.

[1] Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is an electronic system designed to help the driver maintain vehicle control under adverse conditions. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Factors including speed, road conditions and driver steering input can all affect whether VSC will be effective in preventing a loss of control.
[2] Brake Assist is designed to help the driver take full advantage of the benefits of ABS. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake-system maintenance and tire and road conditions.
[3] Smart Stop Technology operates only in the event of certain simultaneous brake and gas pedal applications. When engaged, the system will reduce engine power to help the brakes bring the vehicle to a stop. Factors including speed, road conditions and driver input can all impact stopping distance. Smart Stop Technology is not a substitute for safe and attentive driving and does not guarantee instant stopping.
