Toyota-developed Dynamic Torque Control AWD combines power, driving confidence and efficiency to offer more choice to Canadian car lovers
TORONTO, ONTARIO – MARCH 20, 2020 – As we welcome Spring, we can’t forget about our Canadian winters. Winter is a fact of life in Canada – which is why the all-new 2020 Toyota Camry lineup includes five model and trim combinations riding on the company’s specially designed and engineered Dynamic Torque Control AWD system. Now listed on Toyota.ca and arriving in Toyota Dealer showrooms across the country this month, the Camry AWD is ready to turn winter driving into all-wheel drive fun.
“The beauty of Canada is our four seasons including winter where most Canadians embrace the cold and the snow – and that’s easier to do with a vehicle designed to take the hassle out of winter driving,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “Toyota knows this, so we’re delighted to invite Canadians who love the driving fun, unparalleled comfort and sporty, modern style of our popular Camry sedan to take advantage of the extra all-weather performance of our new all-wheel-drive models.”
For the new Camry, Toyota engineers responded to North American demand for an available AWD powertrain that would provide effective traction for when the weather turns inclement and the roads become slick, while minimizing the most common drawback of AWD – namely, additional fuel use. They found the answer in the Dynamic Torque Control AWD – originally developed for the all-new RAV4 in 2019. The flexibility and engineering of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) design process allowed engineers to modify the RAV4 system and apply it to the Camry. The result is an AWD model that adds just 165 lbs. compared to the front wheel drive Camry equivalents, while matching those FWD models in all critical criteria – including passenger space, trunk room, ride comfort, cabin quietness and vehicle agility.
When required, the Camry’s AWD system can direct up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels – in response to acceleration from a standing start, or slippage by the front wheels. Notably, when all wheel drive isn’t required – such as on long highway stretches – the electromagnetic-controlled coupling on the front of the rear wheel drive axle can disengage the propeller shaft from the differential to save fuel. The AWD system will re-engage in an instant when needed and is transparent to the driver.
Other than the additional traction gained, the new Toyota Camry AWD models are equipped with the same standard features and specifications as their FWD equivalents. This includes a powerful yet efficient 2.5L Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine that generates 202 horsepower on the LE, SE and XLE grade and 205 horsepower on the XSE model that is linked to a responsive sequential shift mode eight-speed automatic transmission. The Toyota Camry AWD also comes equipped with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, air conditioning, LED headlamps, keyless entry with remote trunk release, a multi-information display, backup camera, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and the Star Safety System. Toyota will offer the AWD models in a selection of trim levels, as follows:
