Record Electrified Vehicle Sales Power Toyota Canada Inc. to Strong 2023

Electrified vehicles represented 43.9% of vehicles sold by TCI last year

Lexus Division sets all-time vehicle sales record in 2023


TORONTO, Ontario – January 4, 2024 – Seeing very strong demand for its electrified vehicles, Toyota Canada Inc.’s (TCI) positive sales momentum continued through 2023, with strong December and record fourth quarter sales pushing the company to a total of 227,460 vehicles sold.   

Record electrified vehicles sales continue to lead the way for both Toyota and Lexus
Electrified vehicles continued to lead the way for TCI in 2023, with 99,824 units sold, up 92.8% year over year, representing 43.9% of the company’s overall vehicle sales in 2023. 

Toyota division sold a record 82,668 electrified vehicles in 2022, up 96.9% year over year, representing 42.1% of Toyota’s total sales for 2023. 

Led by very strong sales of Canadian-made NX Hybrid and RX Hybrid, the Lexus division sold a record 17,156 electrified vehicles in 2023, up 75.4% year over year, representing 55.0% of its total sales for 2023.

A total of 16,600 Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEV, comprising of EV, PHEV and FCEV) units were among the electrified Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold during 2023.

Q4 was a record quarter for TCI’s electrified vehicles sales with 24,533units sold, up 96.7% year over year, and representing 41.6% of the company’s overall sales in the quarter.

Sales momentum for TCI’s electrified vehicles is expected to continue in 2024 with strong demand for the battery-electric Lexus RZ and Toyota bZ4X, for the RAV4 Prime and Prius Prime plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and rapidly growing electrified vehicles sales.

Strong momentum heading into 2024
TCI’s Q4 sales reached a Q4 record of 58,989 units, up 30.6% year over year, for a total of 227,460 units for the year. Toyota division sold a Q4 record of 51,860 units, up 34.1% from Q4 2022, while Lexus division sold a Q4 record of 7,129 units, up 9.6% from Q4 2022.

TCI’s December sales accounted for 16,233 units sold, up 21.2% from December 2022. 

Toyota division sold 14,153 units in December, up 23.6% from December 2022, for a total of 196,261 units sold in 2023, up 12.0% from 2022. 

Lexus division sold 2,080 units sold in December, up 7.2% from December 2022, setting a December sales record. Lexus ended 2023 as its best year ever in Canada with 31,199 units sold, up 24.7% from 2022.

The best-selling non-pick-up-truck (RAV4) and best-selling car (Corolla) in Canada…
With 74,688 units sold in 2023, the Toyota RAV4 remains the best-selling passenger vehicle in Canada. And the Toyota Corolla, with 28,260 units sold in 2023, soldiers on for its second year as the best-selling car in Canada.

Some particular Toyota and Lexus models registered significant overall sales in 2023, including:

  • Toyota RAV4 (74,688 units, up 33.6% year over year (YOY) – best-selling non-pick-up-truck in Canada). This includes 30,741 units for the RAV4 Hybrid (up 130.0% YOY) and 8,208 units for the RAV4 Prime (up 423.8% YOY)

  • Toyota Corolla (29,260 units – best-selling car in Canada). This includes 9,676 units of the Corolla Hybrid (up 236.1% YOY)

  • Lexus NX Hybrid (5,643 units (up 20.0% YOY) – annual record)

  • Lexus RX Hybrid (6,142 units (up 237.1% YOY) – annual record)

  • Toyota Corolla Cross (13,140 units (up 41.9% YOY) – annual record)

  • Toyota bZ4X (4,179 units in its first full year of sales)

  • Toyota Tundra (13,365 units (up 15.6% YOY) – annual record)

  • Toyota Tacoma (16,433 units (up 29.0% YOY) – annual record)

  • Toyota Highlander Hybrid (5,977 units (up 112.8% YOY) – annual record)

  • Toyota Crown (1,104 units in its first partial year of sales)

  • Toyota Grand Highlander (4,383 units in its first partial year of sales)

Toyota vehicles assembled in Canada in high demand
The RAV4, which remains for 2023 the best-selling passenger vehicle in Canada and reached record sales in 2023 is assembled in Canada. Also assembled in Canada and reaching yearly record sales are the Lexus NX and Lexus RX. 

Responding to the needs of Canadian consumers, 67%, or two thirds of Lexus vehicles sold in Canada last year were assembled in Canada.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada has assembled 525,787 vehicles in Canada during 2023.
