TORONTO, July 16, 2026 – The Toyota Prius is the sedan that started a revolution. Globally recognized as the world’s first production hybrid, today’s Prius is better than ever – combining incredible efficiency and other benefits of powertrain electrification with futuristic style, intelligent technologies, and spirited performance. Available as a hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) with all-wheel drive, or a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) with exceptional EV driving ranges, the Prius family lets Canadians chose the more sustainable vehicle that best fits their needs and desires. New this year, every model is now factory-equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control for even greater year-round comfort, while plug-in hybrid models are enhanced with more flexible charging capabilities.

“The Prius is more than a great car: It’s an expression of Toyota’s commitment to help Canadians live more sustainable lives,” said Steve Pilkey, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “The Prius name has been synonymous with advanced, efficient motoring for more than a quarter-century. Today, with two distinct powertrains, it demonstrates the value of Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to reducing emissions while offering drivers the power of choices that are real-world proven and easy to embrace.”

The Prius legacy has been built on ever-better performance and efficiency, and this tradition continues with a choice of powertrains:

  • The Prius is built around Toyota’s 5th generation hybrid powertrain. This model features a 2.0L gas engine, high-torque electric motors, and an Electronic on-demand all-wheel-drive system for enhanced all-weather stability. This configuration produces 196 system horsepower and a fuel efficiency rating of 4.8L / 100km (city/highway combined).

  • The Prius Plug-in Hybrid enhances the hybrid system with a larger lithium-ion battery pack. The result is more power and efficiency, with 220 system horsepower and enough EV-only driving range for most daily commutes. When longer journeys beckon, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid seamlessly switches into standard hybrid-electric mode, so finding a charger is never an issue. New this year, every Prius PHEV includes a Level 1 and Level 2 charging cable to make charging the lithium-ion power pack even more flexible and convenient.

All models feature a drive mode select system, to tailor the powertrain to each driver’s personal preferences and driving conditions.

Whether it’s built around hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains, every Prius makes a bold statement about the relationship between efficiency and driving fun. A second-generation Toyota New Global Architecture platform (TGNA-C) results in a sleek and progressive body design rides low, with a wide stance. This merges dynamic performance and aerodynamic efficiency, and creates a driving position that feels nimble yet comfortable. The low roofline expresses a futuristic aesthetic while rear flares emphasize sporty performance, finished with grade specific wheels.

Inside, the Prius family welcomes Canadians to a high-tech yet comfortable cabin with room for up to five adults, finished in soft-touch materials and smart design choices. For the driver, all controls and gauges are carefully placed within each reach and sightline. The rear seats fold 60/40 to maximize versatility when additional cargo capacity is required.

Every member of the Prius family is also impressively equipped with state of the art technology – headlined by the Toyota Multimedia system, including a five-year trial of Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect, plus a three-month trial of Drive Connect. This bundle of smart connectivity technologies helps keep drivers informed and safe while simplifying their lives behind the wheel. Toyota Multimedia integrates wirelessly with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and features a Toyota interface that improves interaction between people and vehicle through sight, touch, and voice. Many functions may be controlled via the touch screen via the same gestures used on mobile phone screens.

Every Prius and Prius Plug-in Hybrid also comes with an impressive package of safety features headlined by Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 – a suite of active safety technologies and capabilities that supports driver awareness and decision making to help reduce the potential for accidents. Other standard safety features include the Toyota Star Safety System, eight airbags, rain-sensing wipers, a backup camera, the Intelligent Clearance Sonar system, the Blind Spot Monitor system with Safe Exit Assist, and an anti-theft alarm system with engine immobilizer.

Toyota offers Canadians a choice of two Prius and three Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) trim levels to suit a broad range of needs and desires:
