TORONTO, ONTARIO – January 27, 2020 – Stop dreaming. Start driving. There’s nothing quite like a classic sports car – except a classic sports car that’s been thoroughly updated with state of the art technologies and features that fit today’s lifestyles.

“The Toyota 86 is the choice for Canadians who love driving, and for 2020 we are offering a special treat: the exceptional 86 Hakone Edition,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “Paying tribute to Japan’s famous Hakone Turnpike – a mecca for curve-hugging enthusiasts – this model is wrapped in an exclusive colour and finished with a beautiful interior that will make every drive a trip to remember.”

The heart of a true sports car is performance, which is why the Toyota 86 delivers exceptional handling. With a low-to-the-ground attitude, an ideal weight distribution, and impressive weight-saving construction throughout, the 86 connects the driver to the road like nothing else.

Under the hood, the Toyota 86 features a 2.0L boxer engine – in which the four cylinders lay horizontally opposed to create a more compact engine and a flatter shape. This allows the engine to be centre-mounted – between the front and rear axles – to optimize front-rear weight distribution and lower the centre of gravity to confer enhanced handling and stability. The Toyota 86 is the only sports car featuring a boxer engine in a front engine, rear wheel drive configuration – freeing up the front wheels to maximize steering agility and responsiveness. The engine features Toyota’s cutting-edge D-4S technology, which combines port and direct fuel injection systems to enhance torque at low engine speeds, increase maximum output, and boost fuel efficiency. This engine produces a peak 200 horsepower and 151 lb. ft of torque when coupled to the available six-speed automatic transmission, which includes downshift rev-matching and steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. The 86 is also offered with a six-speed short-throw manual, generating a peak 205 horsepower and 156 lb. ft of torque.

Inside, the cabin is designed around the driver, putting all instruments and controls within easy reach. Deeply bolstered sport seats hold driver and navigator firmly in place through the corners, while making longer drives comfortable too. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is perfectly circular for exceptional grip and top turning performance. A passenger side rear walk-in assist makes it easy to take friends along. When the day calls for racing tires or other gear, the rear seats fold flat.

New for 2020, all Toyota 86 models feature Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, providing swift and safe access to music and more. This is embedded into the touchscreen display audio systems, with USB inputs, the automatic sound levelizer system and steering wheel-mounted controls. Other technology features include keyless entry, cruise control, and power adjustable and heated exterior mirrors.

Safety is always built into a Toyota, which is why the Toyota 86 features six airbags, front seats with headrests designed to minimize whiplash injuries, a tire pressure monitoring system, the Toyota Star Safety System and a backup camera.

The Toyota 86 is offered in a range of models and grades, as follows:

The 2020 Toyota 86 (starting MSRP: $30,150) features the six-speed manual, 17” alloy wheels, LED headlamps, aluminum sport pedals with rubber inserts, eight-speaker audio system with 7” display screen, tilting/telescoping steering column, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual exhaust, and sport fabric seating material.

The 2020 Toyota 86 GT (starting MSRP: $34,450 manual; $34,590 automatic) adds the Toyota Smart Key System with Push Button Start, heated front seats with leather bolsters and suede-like inserts, a 4.2” multi-information display, dual zone automatic air conditioning, a rear spoiler, and LED fog lamps. Models with the manual transmission also receive unique 18” Toyota Racing Development alloy wheels.

The 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition (starting MSRP: $33,850 manual; $35,050 automatic) is built upon the GT models – adding a unique Hakone green exterior complemented by 17” bronze finish alloy wheels, plus a unique tan and black Alcantara trimmed interior finished with an embossed “86” logo.
