2009 TOYOTA MATRIX - PRODUCT DETAIL
BLENDING SPORTY PERFORMANCE STYLING WITH IMPRESSIVE UTILITY
When it first rolled off the line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) in Cambridge, Ontario in 2002, it was immediately apparent that the Toyota Matrix would change the North American compact segment. The first Matrix - launched in the 2003 model year - combined the functionality and flexibility of a compact SUV with the sporty styling and economy of a performance sedan, and has been a popular choice for Canadians ever since.
Now, with the introduction of the 2nd generation Matrix - new for the 2009 model year - the Toyota team members that design and build the Matrix make things better with inspired new styling, an emphasis on sporty performance, and continued impressive utility and Toyota quality and value, to create what may arguably be the perfect Canadian car.
MADE IN CANADA - MADE FOR CANADA
Made in Canada - for Canadians: that describes the all-new Toyota Matrix perfectly. TMMC is the only assembly plant in the world that builds the Toyota Matrix, and TMMC's important position within Toyota means that its team members provided vital input for the design of this all-new vehicle.
From the spacing of the pedals to accommodate winter boots and the design of storage pockets and cup holders, to the specification of weather stripping, a high-output cabin heater, and an available all-wheel-drive model, the Toyota Matrix is ready for all the weather and road conditions that Canada can throw at it.
FOUR MODELS TO SUIT ALL TASTES
Canadians can choose from four Matrix models, ensuring there's a Matrix for every taste:
TWO NEW ENGINES DELIVER ALL NEW POWER AND EFFICIENCY
The 2009 Toyota Matrix line-up features a choice of two engines that deliver more power and efficiency than ever before.
The Toyota Matrix is powered by Toyota's all-new 1.8-litre four-cylinder engines featuring Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) on both the intake and exhaust cams. This engine produces up to 132 horsepower @ 6,000 RPM, and up to 128 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 RPM.
The Matrix XR, Matrix XRS and Matrix AWD benefit from a larger, 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). This engine generates up to 158 horsepower @ 6,000 RPM, and up to 162 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 RPM.
Both engines feature 16 valves, sequential multiport electronic fuel injection, a stainless steel exhaust system, and achieve superior output and fuel efficiency.
THREE TRANSMISSIONS FOR RESPONSIVENESS
The 2009 Matrix comes with a choice of three transmissions, depending on model:
The Matrix, Matrix XR and Matrix XRS are equipped with a five-speed manual transmission with close-ratio gearbox and overdrive. When mated to the 1.8-litre engine on the Matrix, this combination consumes 7.8 litres of fuel per 100 km in the city, and 6.2 litres per 100 km on the highway (7.1L /100 km combined). Meanwhile, when coupled to the 2.4-litre engine found in the Matrix XR and Matrix XRS, this combination consumes 9.6 litres of fuel per 100 km in the city, and 7.1 litres per 100 km on the highway (8.5L/100 km combined).
The Matrix may be equipped with an available four-speed automatic electronically controlled transaxle transmission, overdrive and lock-up torque converter. This combination consumes 8.1 litres of fuel per 100 km in the city, and 6.2 litres per 100 km on the highway (7.2L /100 km combined).
The four-speed automatic is also fitted as standard on the Matrix AWD. This combination consumes 10.2 litres of fuel per 100 km in the city, and 7.6 litres per 100 km on the highway (9.1L /100 km combined).
The Matrix XR and Matrix XRS may be ordered with an available five-speed automatic electronically controlled transaxle transmission with sequential multi-mode shifter and overdrive and lock-up torque converter. This combination consumes 9.7 litres of fuel per 100 km in the city, and 6.9 litres per 100 km on the highway (8.4L /100 km combined).
Regardless of engine and transmission combination, all 2009 Toyota Matrix models achieve an atmosphere-friendly emissions rating of Tier 2 Bin 5.
WHEN PERFORMANCE IS EVERYTHING: SUSPENSION, HANDLING, STEERING
The all-new Toyota Matrix is designed from the ground up to deliver sensational performance, whether it's straight-line acceleration on a highway or hugging the twists and turns of an on-ramp.
All models are equipped with an electronically controlled throttle and electric power rack and pinion steering to deliver rapid, controlled and smooth response and handling. The Matrix XR and Matrix AWD can be equipped with available Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control and 17" alloy wheels for additional performance. Toyota's VSC and Traction Control performance technologies are standard on the Matrix XRS.
All Matrix models are fitted with an independent front suspension featuring Macpherson gas struts, and all Matrix and Matrix XR models feature a torsion beam rear suspension with gas shock absorbers. Both feature coil springs and stabilizer bars.
SURE-FOOTED FOR DRIVING CONFIDENCE
The Matrix, Matrix XR and Matrix AWD are equipped with P205/55R16 all-season radials on 16" steel wheels. The Matrix XR and Matrix AWD may be fitted with available 17" alloy wheels featuring P215/45R17 all-season radials. For added style and performance, the Matrix XRS is equipped with P215/45R18 all-season radials on 18" alloy wheels with wheel locks.
All models benefit from confident stopping power thanks to a power-assisted Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with front ventilated disc and rear disc brakes, Brake Assist and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).
SAFETY FEATURES COVER ALL THE BASES
The 2009 Toyota Matrix is equipped with a number of active and passive systems to maximize the safety of the driver, passengers, and others sharing the road.
All models are equipped with driver and front passenger dual stage airbags, front seat mounted side airbags, plus front and rear side/curtain shield airbags.
Inside, the Matrix features three-point lap and shoulder belts in all five seating positions, plus front seatbelt pre-tensioners, force-limiters and adjustable "B" pillar shoulder belt anchors for comfort and security.
Younger passengers are provided for with child protector rear door locks and anchor points for child restraint seats.
"VIBRANT CLARITY" CREATES A DYNAMIC, SPORTY, COUPE-LIKE EXTERIOR
The 2009 Toyota Matrix features a coupe-like exterior inspired by Toyota's Vibrant Clarity design language. The result is a sporty shape that is more dynamic than the 1st generation Matrix, with a lower roofline that emphasizes flowing lines and a fun-to-drive image. Some models feature front and rear underbody spoilers and/or skirt packages. Meanwhile, continuous character lines run from the front grille to the A-pillar, and are balanced by rounded rear windows.
Overall, the sporty, coupe-like exterior makes the new Matrix a distinctive and immediately recognizable vehicle, even from a distance.
COMFORTABLE AND SMART INTERIOR STYLING
Inside, the 2009 Toyota Matrix maintains its roominess despite a lower exterior profile, thanks to a Vibrant Clarity-informed design that pursues spaciousness. Compared to the 1st generation Matrix, the 2009 model features a completely redesigned interior that emphasizes driving performance, style, entertainment and utility. Seats have been redesigned to adjust for the new, lower profile while maintaining the high comfort level and headroom that Matrix customers expect.
Designers paid particular attention to the instrument panel and centre cluster, to create the sensation of a jet cockpit for the driver. All models feature Toyota's Optitron electronic gauges, which feature bright white lighting and red needles. The sporty sensation is further enhanced with a new three-spoke steering wheel.
Throughout the interior, designers supplied multiple storage spaces, plus cargo area shopping bag hooks and floor-mounted D rings for cargo and luggage tie-down convenience. A folding tonneau cover is standard equipment on all models, to help keep items placed in the cargo area out of sight.
Models equipped with air conditioning benefit from a new, high-efficiency system that features larger vents for directional accuracy, rear seat heater ducts, and improved heating and cooling.
