Toyota Canada Continues to Take Steps to Lead in Vehicle Quality and Safety

  • Launches customer advisory and program despite no safety defect being found
  • Still on track to establish Product Quality Field Offices
TORONTO, ON – Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) continues to improve processes and establish infrastructure to become a more responsive, safety-focused organization to better meet the needs of its customers.
The review of TCI’s quality and safety improvement processes are about fine tuning customer listening tools.  Listening more closely to each customer allows Toyota to better understand customer concerns and significantly improves the ability to respond quickly with the right solution.
Recently, TCI received a single complaint concerning an occurrence where engine speed (RPM) fluctuated or varied mildly, and for a short period of time, when a customer operated a high-powered two-way radio in transmit mode in close proximity to an accessory cruise control unit.
The complaint was investigated and it was determined that there is no safety defect in the vehicle or in the accessory.  In addition, the two-way radio is licensed for use under specific regulatory conditions and frequencies in Canada and is not licensed for use by the general public.  Nonetheless, TCI has decided to issue a customer advisory to affected vehicle owners to ensure their continued confidence in the quality and safety of their vehicles and will remove the accessory cruise control at no cost to the customer and reimburse them for the purchase price.  There are approximately 9,000 owners of 2006-2010 Yaris vehicles who may have had the accessory installed.
Canadian Product Quality Field Offices
Announced on July 8, 2010, seven Product Quality Field Offices will be located throughout North America.  Soon-to-be opened in Canada, offices in Toronto and Calgary are dedicated to investigating quality issues raised by customers and dealers.
The Canadian offices will be staffed by engineers from TCI and Japan.  The offices will represent the voice of our customers in issues of quality and safety and have direct link to Toyota’s North American Quality Task Force to improve knowledge sharing throughout the organization and improve response time on issues.
